Given the huge disparity between impact on Canada and the US, this makes perfect sense from the US perspective.

The US is around 76% exports for Canada accounting for 19% of GDP. Meanwhile, exports from US to Canada account for around 2.7% of the GDP for the US.

It’s what happens when you pursue feels based politics for a decade instead of looking out for national interest. Both Canada and Europe bought into the whole shared values narrative, and are now finding out that their dependence will be exploited by the hegemon.
